SolarPaces2019 - Concentrating Solar Power and Chemical Energy Systems

Chair's Welcome Message

Dear colleagues,

It is my honor to invite you to the SolarPACES 2020 International Conference, September 28 to October 2, 2020. SolarPACES (Solar Power and Chemical Energy Systems) is the premier international conference and network for advancing commercial deployment and research and development of concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) and related technologies.

The global growth of CSP with thermal energy storage has proved that the technology can provide flexible, dispatchable solar energy any time of day. As global energy markets begin to demand renewable electricity that can respond to grid needs and complement increasing amounts of variable wind and solar photovoltaic power, CSP technology is well positioned to continue its growth.

In the midst of a historic global pandemic, SolarPACES has decided to host this year’s SolarPACES conference in a virtual, on-line format and highlight the latest in global solar thermal research and development. I have been particularly excited to be able to lead the United States’s contribution to that research, including the Generation 3 (Gen3) CSP funding program, which, in 2018, was launched by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO), awarding $85 million to 25 projects. These projects have the ambitious goal of significantly improving the efficiency of CSP plants by developing integrated thermal transport and storage systems and components that can withstand temperatures above 700° Celsius—higher than conventional molten salt plants based on nitrates. By enabling the integration of CSP with high-efficiency, low-cost advanced power cycles based on supercritical carbon dioxide, Gen3 CSP systems have the potential to lower the cost of CSP plants by approximately 20 percent, a major step toward SETO’s 2030 cost target of $0.05 per kilowatt-hour for plants with 12 or more hours of storage.

By holding this year’s conference on-line, we are looking forward to be able to have more attendees than usual able to join us and participate in the technical program. With an on-line format, we will be able to highlight the latest advances in CSP from around the world, in plenary sessions with the leaders in solar thermal technology development and technical sessions describing the latest advances in research, all of which you will be able to participate in from your home offices.

On behalf of the conference organizing committee, I am delighted to invite you to join us on-line this year, and look forward to being able to meet you all in person in the future.

Sincerely,

Dr. Avi Shultz
